Compared
to other hobbies, snorkeling is relatively cheap to start you getting going.
Snorkeling equipment can start you off from as little as $50 ranging to
several hundred dollars depending on the type of snorkeling activity you may
wish to follow.
Having
the right snorkeling gear is essential if you are thinking to
start snorkeling.
Going for your first outing with the wrong gear can be frustrating and may also put you off this
wonderful activity. So take your time when choosing on how to invest
in your snorkeling gear.
If you are confused on how to go about in
buying your snorkeling equipment, do not worry. This snorkeling
equipment guide, is designed to help you in understanding the
different types of snorkeling equipment out there and what to look
for when you have decided that it is time to invest in snorkeling.
So
let us begin...
The
Scuba Dive/Snorkeling Mask
The
scuba dive/snorkeling mask is your window to the underwater world. By
creating an airspace, the scuba mask enables you to see clearly
underwater. All scuba diving masks consist of the lenses also known
as a faceplate, a comfortable skirt and a head strap.

There
are different types of styles and shapes. These range from oval
shaped models to lower internal volume masks and both may be made
from two different materials; Neoprene or silicone.
Choosing
the right scuba mask is important if you want to make the
most out of
your snorkeling excursions. A cheap mask will not last you that long
and will not give you the visual experiences and comfort that a good
scuba mask will provide you with.
Once
you have bought your mask and are satisfied with it, it is time then
to take care
of your scuba mask. Follow the tips and techniques
within this guide which contains scuba mask defogging tips which you
can do before each dive so as to enhance your visual experience
underwater and tips on how to prolong the life of your scuba dive
mask.
The
Snorkel
The
snorkel is an integral part of the snorkeling gear. A snorkel is
little more than a mouthpiece and tube that fits comfortably in your
mouth and extends the water surface. Thanks to this simple piece of equipment, you are able to breath the underwater
continuously without having to stop and lift your head to breath.

The
lower part of the snorkels is known as the mouthpiece which is
constructed from neoprene rubber or silicone whilst the upper part of
the snorkel is called the barrel and is normally constructed from a
flexible plastic tubing.
All
snorkels have got a purge valve which will enable you to easily clear
water whilst some more sophisticated snorkels also have a splash
guard which prevents wave water from entering the snorkel.
Although
snorkels are simple in their construction and may all be similar to
the untrained eye, there are some features you need to look for when
buying your
snorkel.
Once you have bought your snorkel, it is time to
set up
the snorkel to your scuba mask.
Snorkeling Fins
Whilst
fins are not obligatory pieces of snorkeling gear, they however
do provide you with greater maneuverability whilst swimming. Through
the use of fins, you are able to efficiently thread through the water
with far less effort.
Propulsion
underwater is greatly increased by providing a large surface fin
area. If you are going down for a long snorkeling event, I would
recommend that you use fins so as to retain your strength.
There
are 2 types of fins to be considered when buying snorkeling fins.
These are known as full foot fins or strap fins which are to be used
in conjunction with wetsuit
boots.
Snorkeling Vest
Snorkeling
vests is an addition piece of snorkeling equipment which is there to
assist you with increased floatation. Snorkeling vests are inflated
by blowing air from you mouth. The more air you blow in, the more
buoyant in the water you will be.

Should you wear or not wear a vest. Well that
depend upon the type of snorkeling excursion you will be undertaking. They
are best to be used in instances where you have in mind to perform long
snorkeling outings. Equally, it is recommended that snorkeling vests
are used for kids for safety reasons.
Snorkeling
vests also provide additional benefit, in which the vest will protect
you from the harmful UV rays. Remember when you are snorkeling, your
back is exposed to the sun most of the time, so it may be wise to
invest in a snorkeling vest.
