When
you buy a new scuba diving
mask, the faceplate will contain a protective coating for the rubber
or silicone skirting which is as a result of the manufacturing
process.
It is important that this substance is removed before first
using the dive mask, or else this coating will form
condensation on the faceplate whilst scuba or snorkeling and will
continue to fog up your scuba diving mask during every use.
Trust
me scuba diving or
snorkeling with a fogging scuba mask can be extremely irritating. It
will definitely diminish your scuba or snorkeling experience.

There are
several ways to remove this coating. Gently rubbing a non, gel tooth
paste should do the job. Also using a washing liquid mixed with some
sugar works fine to remove this substance. However there are several
great mask defogger solutions out there.
I really
recommend the Mcnett Mask defogger solutions. You can use it before
using your new
scuba diving mask and continually use it before every dive.
I find that
this solution works extremely well. In fact it is like an extension
of the scuba diving mask just like the snorkel, I always store it away
in my
scuba gear bag. Basically, just place a couple of drops on the lenses
and rub around and rinse off the mask defogger solution thoroughly so
as not to enter your eyes.
A friend of
mine had recently gave up on a great scuba diving mask as he thought
that it
was somehow defective because it was continuously fogging for him. In
fact he had already bought himself a replacement. I later found out
that he did not clean the mask from the coating left during
the
manufacturing process.
The fogging problem for this scuba diving mask
was
simply resolved by applying a few drops of
Mcnett
Super Sea Drops Mask Defogger
on each
lens. He later told
me that
his mask stopped fogging up and now uses the solution
continuously before each dive.
The next technique, I usually use after
not wearing the scuba diving mask for a prolonged period of time. Rub a
non,
gel tooth paste around the lenses.
Just use a small amount of
toothpaste as it may get within the seals and will therefore be hard
to rinse out. Leave it for 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly making sure
that no residue of toothpaste remains as this will sting your eyes
when wearing your scuba diving mask under water.
You can then later use
the
scuba dive mask defogger solution before entering the water. This will
guarantee that your scuba diving mask will not fog up on you through
out
your dive.
There
you have it, by following the above scuba diving mask defogging techniques
your diving mask should provide you with enhanced underwater
sight
seeing experiences.
Scuba mask care – Tips on maintaining your dive mask
There
are 3 basic scuba
mask maintenance procedures which should be used in all
diving/snorkeling equipment.
-
Rinse thoroughly with
freshwater after each use – After you have used your mask in saltwater,
it should be soaked for several minutes in warm freshwater to prevent
the build up of salt crystals which could damage the seals of your
scuba diving mask. A rinse with freshwater will eliminate contaminants
and
corrosion.
-
Avoid leaving your mask
in direct sunlight – Exposing your scuba diving mask for extensive
periods under the rays from the sun, will eventually deteriorate any
neoprene and silicone products.
-
Store in a dry cool place – It is important
that you dry your mask before storing it. Do not leave you
equipment wet in a closed environment like your scuba gear bag. Also
take care to store your silicone mask away from black rubber products
to prevent staining of silicone.
By
following the above
scuba mask care procedures, you can be rest assured that your mask will
last you for several more years of scuba snorkeling adventures.
