Snorkeling and Scuba Diving Malaysia

Snorkeling and scuba diving in Malaysia is like being in another world. What's so great about scuba diving and snorkeling in Malaysia is the rich underwater life, and your potential of being close to marine creatures like manta rays, parrot fish, frog fish, green turtles and barracudas.

Whether you're new to scuba diving/snorkeling or not, Malaysia can offer you an array of diving spots suited for any ages, shapes and experience levels.

Sibuan Island outside Semporna in Borneo is a great place to start your scuba diving or snorkeling, and we started our diving course here. The island is perfect for newbies because of its shallow waters and almost no currents. It was definitely one of my favorite places to scuba dive!

For experienced divers and snorkelers, Sipadan Island is more of challenge because of its stronger currents. At the same time, Sipadan houses an unique and enormous diversity of fish and corals and it's known for world-class diving.

If you're more into macro-diving Malaysia's islands can offer you that. Mabul and Kapalai islands in Sabah, Borneo are typically chosen by macro-divers. Get close to ghost pipe fish, mandarin fish, pygmy sea horses, sea shrimps, stone fish and all sorts of nudibranches.

The Perhentians outside Malaysia's northeast coast are also a good place to snorkel and scuba dive. Immense yourself in colorful coral and fish gardens, and face green turtles and black tip sharks. And don't worry about the sharks – they're not dangerous as long as you keep your distance ;-) They're more likely to be afraid of you than you are of them!

Snorkeling around the Perhentian Islands don't require any special skills, and the currents aren't particular strong.

But note: currents and visibility differs from place to place, and from time to time.

When I snorkeled and dived in Malaysia it was during the month of June: one of the best visible months.

Otherwise the best time to snorkel and dive in Malaysia would be from April to November where the visibility can reach 30 meters :-)
